Pulsed electric fields (PEF) enable opening o fpores in cell plasma membranes enabling permeability of external molecules and etc. Using PF, it is possible to enhance the yield of paddy and other crops/plants, such as mushroom spawn. The growth, quantity or volume and nutitious ocntent were also investigated. Considering that mush rooms are also used by pharmacy for many medical applications, this is a fertile field to use common/natural plants for various healthcare applications.

PEF could also be applied to liquid food, such as juices to sterilize them without heat-non-thermal sterilzation. This not only maintains the color and tatse, but also the flavor and the nutrients. Discussed in this presentation is the PEF applications on Paddy, mushrooms, and fruit juices, such as orange, lemon.


Raji Sundararajan, PhD (Electrical Engineering) is a Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology Department, Purdue University. She obtained her initial training on electroporation at Johns Hopkins Medical School and has been doing research on it for over a decade. She was the recipient of the 2010 Indiana 'Women & Hi-Tech' award for "Distinguished use of technology in Healthcare Life Science". She won the prestigious, one year fellowship to study regenerative medicine therapy using optoinjection and electroporation techniques at Purdue. She is a reviewer of NIH, NSF, US International Science & Technology Center, and US National Research Council proposals and various scholarly journals.

She has over 200 journal and conference publications and the Editor of the book, "Electroporation-based therapies for cancer". An active Senior Member of IEEE, she was also the president of Electrostatics Society of America, Associate Editor of 2 IEEE Transactions, and the primary author and Chair of two IEEE Standards.
